Q & A

What happens if a CFL breaks?

CFLs have a small amount of mercury, therefore, it is important to follow the EPA guidelines when cleaning up a broken CFL. The EPA recommends:

  • Open a window and leave the room (restrict access) for at least 15 minutes.
  • Remove all materials by scooping up and using sticky tape to pick up glass and powder instead of vacuuming.
  • Place all cleanup materials in two plastic bags, seal it and throw it in an outside trash can.

For more information on CFL cleanup and disposal, visit www.epa.gov/mercury/spills or www.energystar.gov.

How do you dispose of a CFL properly?

Due to the small amount of mercury, the EPA recommends that you make use of your local recycling options for CFLs.

Contact the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control for information on CFL recycling programs in your area by calling DHEC's Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling at 1-800-768-7348.

You can also find additional information on recycling at www.scdhec.gov/environment or www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling.

If you do put a CFL in the garbage, be sure to seal the bulb in two plastic bags and put it into the outside trash, or other protected outside location, for the next normal trash collection. CFLs should not be disposed of in an incinerator.

At Home Depot stores customers can simply take in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs, and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk. The bulbs will then be managed responsibly by an environmental management company who will coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance. For more information go to www.homedepot.com/ecooptions.
