Santee Cooper was established in 1934 to benefit all the residents of South Carolina, in particular as a resource for improving their health, welfare and material success. Nearly three quarters of a century later, Santee Cooper is still guided by this founding principle.
We're proud of our record of environmental stewardship, and we'll draw on our past to meet the challenges of the future. In 1990, the Santee Cooper Board of Directors board passed a resolution that formalized what we had already been practicing for years. It stated that protection and improvement of our environment are equal in importance to providing affordable energy.
In 2007, the board renewed and strengthened that commitment. Over the next few years, we will significantly increase how much electricity we generate from non-greenhouse gas emitting resources, biomass fuels, energy efficiency and conservation. Each of these resources is key as we serve the state's growing numbers of residential, commercial and industrial customers.
Santee Cooper has the vision to see how important environmental protection is to our ability to provide affordable electricity.
As we plan for long-term electricity needs and environmental sustainability we will remain true to our original commitment, guided by what most benefits all South Carolinians.
