Santee Cooper, South Carolina's
state-owned electric and water utility, is now in the process of renewing the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license required to operate its
hydroelectric and inland navigation system on lakes Marion and Moultrie,
commonly called the Santee Cooper Lakes.
|
 |
The key points to this
process are below.
- Santee Cooper's objective
is to continue to maintain the balance of multiple uses for lakes Marion and
Moultrie.
- Since the lakes were
completed in 1942, Santee Cooper has managed the lakes for 1. Hydroelectric
generation 2. Inland navigation and 3. Recreational uses that include
residential subdivisions, fishing, boating and hunting.
- Santee Cooper is funding at
least 16 primary studies on the lake and Santee and Cooper rivers that are
evaluating fish habitat, flows and cultural resources. These studies will assist
governmental agencies, such as the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, S.C.
Department of Health and Environmental Control, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
and the National Marine Fisheries Service, in providing input into the
relicensing process. The cost to Santee Cooper for these studies is expected to
exceed $2 million.
- Santee Cooper has
established working relationships with many environmental, fishing and hunting
organizations on license renewal.
